The 1925 Bromley Atlas shows M.J. Bates as the owner of the empty lot where this house was built.

In 1930 part of this house was rented for $41 a month by George Johnson, a 28-year old plumber supply salesman. George lived in 196 Washington with his 29-year old wife Pauline and their infant daughter Paula.
