The 1916 Bromley Atlas shows Florence Phelps as the owner of this house. The 1924 City Directory lists Joseph Arnold, a foreman, as a resident of 15 Newton. The 1925 City Directory lists James McCluskey, a machinist; and William Palmer, a janitor, as residents of 11 Newton. Wesley Ginn, an annealer; and Henry Phelps, a machinist, are listed as residents of 15 Newton. The 1925 Bromley Atlas shows W. and J. Palmer as the owners of 11 Newton and E. Phelps as the owner of 15 Newton. In 1930 11 Newton was owned by James Dilworth, a 35-year old apartment house janitor from the West Indies. James lived with his 70-year old mother Mary (born in the West Indies), his 35-year old wife Etta (born in the West Indies), and their five children: 12-year old James, 11-year old Cathleen, 8-year old Phyllis, 6-year old Edna, and 4-year old John. 11 Newton was valued at $6,500. 15 Newton was owned by Benjamin Banks, a 48-year old laundryman from Virginia. Benjamin lived with his 45-year old wife Julia (born in Virginia) and two boarders: 31-year old Florence Nichols, a maid from Maryland; and 9-month old Alvin Reddick. 15 Newton was valued at $9,000. |
