39 Mount Hood Road is a 14-unit apartment building that was designed by Weinbaum and Wexler and built in 1926 for Harry Goldstein. This three-story brick building rises 35 feet from a stone foundation to a flat tar and gravel roof. The cost of construction was $30,000. Through at least 1932 this building was addressed as 39 Wellington Road. The 1925 Bromley Atlas shows Bentley Warren, et al, trustees, as the owners of a large wood-frame house that stood where this building was constructed. By 1932 this building was owned by the New England Management Company. In 1933 a minor fire in the basement destroyed nearby windows and trim, and caused structural damage to the floor timbers of the first floor. By 1955 this building was owned by the Niles Company. In 1981 the brick balconies on the second and third floors were repointed and repaired. At the same time, the parapet wall topping the front facade was repaired. A new building-wide fire alarm system was also installed. By 1982 this building was owned by the Mount Hood Renewal Trust, Peter Bailey Trustee. In 1982 a canopy was installed over the front entrance. The building was cited for not having illuminated exit signs, which were subsequently installed. In 1987 new gas-fired steam boilers and a new hot water system were installed. In 1991 a new rubber roof was installed. In 1996 a fire wall was built to enclose the boiler room, correcting a fire safety violation. |
