This brick multi-family house was built in 1900 and rises three stories to an asphalt roof. A renovation was performed in 1978. The 1916 Bromley Atlas shows Johanna Johnson as the owner of this house. The 1925 City Directory lists Herbert Fearnley, a compositor, as a resident of 28 Brooks. Albert Fearnley, a fireman with Engine 34 of the Boston Fire Department; and Herbert Fearnley, a machinist, are listed as residents of 30 Brooks. The 1925 Bromley Atlas shows H. and M.J. Fearnley as the owners of this house. In 1930 this house was owned by John Connolly, a 42-year old laborer from Ireland. John lived in 30 Brooks with his 42-year old Irish wife Ester and their four children: 13-year old Mary, 11-year old John, 9-year old Margaret, and 5-year old Francis. Part of this house was rented by Thomas Riley, a 28-year old from Ireland who worked as a laborer for a rubber company. Thomas lived with his 24-year old Irish wife Ellen; 5-year old daughter Bridget; 1-year old son John; 21-year old John Hoyce, a boarder from Ireland who worked as a laborer; and 22-year old Thomas Wall, a boarder from Ireland who worked as a gardener. 28 Brooks was rented for $35 a month by Peter Flaherty, a 32-year old laborer from Ireland. Peter lived with his 32-year old Irish wife Nora; 22-year old brother-in-law Matthew Kelly, a laborer; 5-year old daughter Lee; and 2-year old daughter Mary. The building was valued at $10,000. |
